PASS Software is a story of a like-minded company with a unique product called PASS Clinical. One of the neat features of their product is that it can diagram your family’s pedigree so that genetic counselors and other medical professionals can spot patterns or indicators that may be useful in diagnosing or managing your health. Pretty cool, eh?

We interviewed PASS Software’s Co-owner and Sales Manager, Jeroen Van Vliet and asked him to tell us a little more about his company and their future plans.

Tell Us About PASS Software?

PASS Software BV was founded in 2008 and we specialize in clinical genetic patient management solutions for healthcare organizations in 13 countries. One of our projects include a national screening in the UK. Right now more than 40 genetic centers and research groups in hospitals and universities use our software.

So What Happened in 2008?

In 2008 we realized that Dutch genetic centers were displeased with the (then) current pedigree drawing solution, Cyrillic, which had reached its end-of-life. We seized the opportunity to develop an alternative program and improved upon Cyrillic’s offerings. Since then, the automatic pedigree drawing tool has evolved to become PASS Clinical.

You Mentioned the National Screening Project in the UK, Please Elaborate.

In 2012, PASS Clinical was chosen by HEART UK for FH (Familial Hypercholesterolaemia) cascade screening. FH is an inherited condition characterized by high cholesterol and early heart disease. The cascade screening identifies other blood relatives who are affected so that if diagnosed, a patient can be treated to prevent heart attacks.

It’s not the first time our software’s been used in an FH screening program. PASS Clinical has been used in Wales and The Netherlands also.

What Made You Look for an Integration Engine?

As PASS Clinical evolved into a complete patient management system, we realized it was imperative that we were able to pass HL7 messages from hospital information systems, laboratory information systems and billing systems in a standardized way.

So the Biggest Challenge Was…

Efficiency. We were using self-built interfaces based on ODBC and web services. We found that we were customizing each one and it was taking up so much time!

With IGUANA it’s easier to receive and process HL7 messages from various hospital information systems.

What’s in the Future for the Company?

Currently our main market is in Europe but we’re excited to explore growth in other regions, such as the United States and New Zealand.

Since the use of IGUANA was so successful in PASS, our parent company, CC Group, is considering using it as an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) in an attempt to disrupt the current travel and hospitality industry.
