Case study: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
Hospitals with similar sized systems have saved upwards of $200,000 in implementation costs using Iguana.
Challenge:
To ensure seamless communication within a hospital, interoperability with EMR systems is a must. This is a common challenge since not all vendors offer systems that can easily communicate with a specific EMR.
Solution:
Iguana® is used to connect EpicCareTM with over 12 essential hospital information systems.
Results:
Over one million records from legacy systems were painlessly converted, and data is easily exchanged with various medical systems, saving both the IT department and physicians countless hours.
EPIC Integration
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center was looking to implement the best available technology to improve the way physicians interact with patient data. They wanted an integration engine that could easily connect their central EMR with other medical systems such as pharmacy, laboratory and billing systems.
Integration Lead, Han’s Groschel, was tasked with finding a suitable integration engine that didn’t heavily rely on the hospital’s IT department and was flexible enough to meet the evolving integration needs of the hospital. “When I put Iguana side by side with other tools, Iguana was always much faster to setup and start using”, states Groschel.
In addition to integrating systems together at Connecticut Children’s, Iguana is also being used to convert data from legacy systems to the EpicCare™ EMR application. Over one million records have been converted, which include hospital encounters, transcription data, radiology data and vaccination information.
The flexibility of Iguana proved particularly critical throughout the process. “You can pretty much do anything you want to with it”, said Groschel, when commenting on how Iguana helped Connecticut Children’s ease the conversion effort.
Iguana is being used to facilitate data exchange between 12 essential hospital systems and the EpicCare™ EMR application, making things easier for the IT department by reducing the number of applications they have to support. Physicians are also seeing direct benefits, as they no longer need to enter data into multiple systems. Hospitals with similar sized systems have saved upwards of $200,000 in implementation costs using Iguana.
Iguana has helped Connecticut Children’s improve efficiencies across the entire hospital, specifically by eliminating data entry repetition, which has reduced data errors across all hospital systems. Patient data is now easy to search for across all systems, allowing the hospital to focus on patient care rather than data entry.
